shift
shift
is an operation that moves the bits held in a store location to the left or right as
specified. There are three different types of shift.
arithmetic shift
is one where if bits are shifted from the right of the location they are lost and
copies of the sign bit are shifted in at the opposite end. If the data represents a
number this operation preserves the positive/negative sign.
cyclic shift rotation
is one where the bits shifted from the end of the location are reinserted at the
oppositc end.
