reductio ad absurdum
reductio ad absurdum
a trick used when a device may be operating as a current source or as a resistor. You assume a current source and proceed with the calculations. If any contradictory answers turn up, you know your original assumption was wrong. Then you can change to the resistor model and finish off the calculations. Reductio ad absurdum usually works whenever you have a two-state system and don't know which state it is in.
