metaphor

metaphor
use of words in a way that the literal left brain cannot understand, but the wholistic right brain can. Example: "The ugly duckling became a beautiful swan." The left brain takes this literally and thinks about a duck and a swan. The right brain sees through the words and knows what they really mean. Being able to think in metaphors is critical to invention. Aristotle said, "The greatest thing by far is to be a master of metaphor."
