Lavender Wands
Lavender Wands
>Lavender Wands.....
>
>You pick the lavender from the bush, being certain that the stems are long
>enough. The variety of lavender that has 18 to 24 inch long stems is best
>for the wand making.
>
>Start with 13 inch long fresh picked lavender. Tie the blooms together
>with string, or florists wire.....Hold the blossoms with the stems pointing
>up in the air....then bend them down one by one to form an umbrella. Take
>a 1/4 inch wide satin ribbon at least 3 yards long. Weave the ribbon satin
>side up, in and out of the stems like a basket. The first two rows are the
>hardest to do because the stems tend to slip around.
>
>After weaving four or five rows, bend the stems together to form a handle
>under the blossoms. Take a toothpick or crochet hook and smooth and
>tighten the ribbon, starting at the top and working down. Continue to
>weave the ribbon in and out of the stems until the entire length of the
>flowers is covered. When you have about 5 inches of woven material, wind
>the ribbon around the stems, and secure.
>
>Store in a warm well ventilated place to dry for about two weeks. After
>the wand is dry, tighten the ribbon again and sew it in place with a few
>stitches. The flower buds eventually drop from the stems, but remain
>encased in the "lantern" that is made by the weaving of the stems with the
>ribbon. These wands are a delight....cutest darn things you ever saw!
