Salt Dough Recipe
Salt Dough Recipe
Here is the recipe for Salt Dough as promised:
2 cups of all-purpose flour
1 cup of salt
half cup of water
Mix flour and salt and slowly add water kneading mixture as it binds.
Add a drop at a time as dough wont work if too wet. Knead dough for
about 10mins until it is of a smooth texture. Allow dough to rest for
about 30mins in an airtight container or wrapped in flim wrap. Roll out
half of mixture at a time keeping remainder covered in container. Roll
out to about a quarter to a half inch thick and use cookie cutters to
make shapes or draw your own shapes on cardboard and cut round them with
a sharp knife. You can also make small bowls or model characters or
beads, don't forget to put holes in with a skewer (if you want them to
hang) before baking. Place on an oven tray and cook in a very cool oven
at 130C/250F for up to eight hours for small items and up to 12 hours
for larger and thicker items. Leave in oven to cool with the door
slightly open. When cool, paint items with acrylic paints, then cover
with 2 coats of varnish allowing the first coat to dry thouroughly. You
can then decorate the shapes with beads, lace, feathers etc.
I have made some heart and star shapes with a small hole at the top put
in before baking. I will decorate them and cut out the same shape with
coloured card and tie the two together with a piece of ribbon and use
them as gift tags.
