Rose Beads
Rose Beads
Dear Robbyn,
Regarding the rose beads...it takes lots of fresh rose petals! Just keep gathering them and store them in the fridge in an airtight baggie. Periodically, you will need to get them out and macerate them...mush them, mash them...they blacken when you do this, but retain the scent. I have found that in order to make enough beads, it is pretty much a summer long process. The petals will only keep in the fridge for a week or so and then you will need to work what you have. Sometimes it helps to put them in the blender to mush them up enough to form a stiff dough...which you then roll into little balls. I thread a needle with fishing line and string them immediately, though you must be really careful when you do. You must also air dry them where they will not be disturbed, turning them a bit every day...a sunny window works well. I would wear gloves when doing this as they can turn your hands funny colors. It does take some work to make these beads, but you will be well pleased with the results when enclosed in a homemade drawstring sachet. They retain their scent for years and when they lose it, you can refresh them with your favorite rose oil by placing a cotton ball with a few drops of the oil into the sachet bag for a few days. They also make lovely pieces of jewelry...quite scent-sational!
